World Beat and Steelbands
Founded in 2009, the WVHS World Beat offers percussionists and interested non‐percussionists the opportunity to study and perform percussion music from around the world. World Beat may cover a variety of styles and genres from a wide range of cultures and countries. Students may have the opportunity to study music from Brazil, Cuba, Argentina, Polynesia, Indonesia, Caribbean, West Africa, Central Africa, Japan, China, and folk music from Europe and the Americas.
World Beat students have the option/opportunity to enroll in group lessons on steelpan. Lessons will be provided by Frank Check, adistrict 204 approved private lesson instructor, and director of the Steelbands at Waubonsee Community College. Students enrolled in steelpan lessons will learn about the steel pan in an ensemble setting, and perform as members of World Beat on the Schlagzeugfest Concert, Spring Percussion Concert, and Mosaic Concert.
World Beat & WV Steel meets on Mondays, and will perform on the Schlagzeugfest Concert, Spring Percussion Concert, and Mosaic Concert. World Beat is directed by Chris Dandeles and Frank Check. Membership is open to anyone enrolled in a WV music course with a passion for world music that can commit to the rehearsal and performance schedule.
