Curricular ChoirsCurricular choral music performance classes in District 204 are fully accredited and each yield one full unit of credit per course. Students demonstrate learning outcomes both in the classroom and in four curricular concerts.
Each of the choirs listed below performs in each of our quarterly curricular concerts. The concerts are scheduled to correspond with the conclusion of each of the four grading periods. Students may also be required to participate in other performances beyond the walls of WVHS, especially in the auditioned choirs. The following are expectations for ALL Waubonsie Valley curricular choral ensembles:

HONORS VARSITY CHAMBER

Seniors enrolled in Varsity Chamber may be eligible to take this course for weighted credit with consent from the directors. In addition to meeting all the criteria for the standard course, senior students eligible for a weighted grade will create a performance and research portfolio which will include: four small ensemble performances with a comprehensive written critique, four evaluations of concert programs, and tangible evidence of leadership activities leading to substantial musical achievement. Students may prepare auditions related to college applications in lieu of the fourth small ensemble performance. Audition and instructor's permission required.

The Varsity Choirs are the most advanced, mixed choral ensembles open to students grades 10-12. Music reading abilities and the demonstration of advanced vocal proficiencies are a prerequisite for this ensemble. Emphases in the class are advanced choral techniques and independent singing skills. Students are expected to be self-motivated and leadership-oriented. Students are placed in this ensemble by audition only. Varsity Choirs will meet in two different sections: Varsity Singers and Varsity Chamber (most advanced). These sections will rehearse and perform both separately and together at various concerts as determined by the directors. Combined rehearsals will take place during a specific lunch period.

This is a choir open to 10-12 grade treble singers on the basis of audition only. Entry level expectations include the ability to read musical notation and sight-sing accurately to the satisfaction of the instructor.
CONCERT CHOIR

Concert Choir is a non-auditioned ensemble open to girls in grades 10-12. The ensemble meets daily as a treble ensemble and combines in rehearsal with the Bass Chorus (see description below) to perform SATB literature. Emphasis is placed on beginning and intermediate vocal/choral techniques and notational abilities.

Bass Chorus is a non-auditioned ensemble for tenor/bass voices. Emphasis is placed on fundamentals of vocal technique as it applies to the changing voice, as well as music literacy. Students will also enhance their understanding of music notation and other elements of music.

This is the initial choral experience for all freshman treble singers. Emphases on fundamentals of vocal technique and music literacy (understanding musical notation.)

Non-Curricular Choirs
In addition to our curriculum ensembles, Waubsonie Valley offers additional extra and co-curricular ensemble opportunities for our students.

Members participate in choral concerts, show choir festivals and clinics, and several community performances throughout the year. Auditions are held in May of the previous school year and all participants must be enrolled in the curricular choir program.

Mosaic sings world and gospel music and has performed at Chicago Symphony Center, Wentz Hall, and the House of Blues. Mosaic Ensemble is a smaller, auditioned group made up of Mosaic members. Mosaic is directed by Mrs. Chelsea King.

Waubonsie Valley’s UnaVoce is a select female chamber choir that is comprised of 20 freshman and sophomore students. UnaVoce performs a variety of chamber repertoire including madrigals, modern works, and jazz, pop, and folk arrangements. The ensemble participates in musical exchanges with other vocal groups, represents WVHS at community events, and invests itself back into the District 204 program through performances at all grade levels. Una Voce is directed by Mrs. Chelsea King.
CLOUD 9 & PINK NOTES
Cloud 9 and Pink Notes are auditioned, student led a cappella groups which perform throughout the year at concerts, outside venues, and other WV events. Auditions for these groups are held in the spring.
