Technique Classes
One of the most successful attributes of the District 204 and Waubonsie Valley orchestra program is that students have opportunities weekly to work in small groups with the directors on technical scales and etudes. This ensures that skills necessary for the various levels of orchestras are introduced, taught, exercised and assessed. Students in Concert Orchestra, Concert Strings, Symphonic Orchestra, and Symphonic Strings attend technique classes *during* their orchestra class time. If their director is Ms. Tyus, then their technique teacher is Mr. Beder. If their director is Mr. Beder, then their technique teacher is Ms. Tyus. Chamber Orchestra students will attend technique class once per week with Ms. Tyus during their lunch period.
Technique class assignment assessments count significantly towards the grade in the orchestra class.
All students in Concert and Symphonic-level technique classes will be provided with music, including etudes and scales that will be assigned in Technique class. Copies of technique music will be available to students on their Google Classroom.
Students in Chamber Orchestra will participate in technique classes or chamber music for half of one lunch period, one day per week.
Students in Chamber Strings participate in sectionals, small chamber groups and full symphony during half of their lunch, rather than technique classes, 3 half lunches per week. It's expected that students in Chamber Strings are taking private lessons. Seniors in Chamber Strings will automatically be enrolled in Honors Chamber Strings, allowing them a 5.0 grading system - they have 3 essays and an honors project to complete as part of the Honors program.
