Curricular Bands
Each WVHS band ensemble is a graded curricular class that meets daily. Each band class focuses on the study and performance of various styles of instrumental music through a variety of performing media, critical listening, and analysis.
Each ensemble has the opportunity to survey music history, compositional technique, improvisation, careers in music, and experiences in electronic music technology. There is also a strong emphasis on the development of individual musicianship. For more information, please read:

WIND ENSEMBLE (Periods 4 & 5)
Mr. Mark Duker
This auditioned ensemble offers the most advanced instrumental experience through study and performance of master works for winds and percussion. Due to the soloistic nature of part assignments, there is a strong emphasis on individual preparation and performance. The Wind Ensemble performs seasonal concerts and participates in state/district festivals and contests.

WIND SYMPHONY (Period 3)

This auditioned ensemble provides sophisticated instrumental experiences through study and performance of master works for winds and percussion. Members are expected to advance their musicianship through completion of technique classes. The Wind Symphony performs seasonal concerts and participates in state/district festivals and contests.
SYMPHONIC WINDS (Period 1) (Not running for 2024-25 but hopefully back in 2025!)
Mr. Chris Dandeles
This ensemble includes band members in grades 9-12, and concentrates on challenging and sophisticated repertoire for winds and percussion. Members are expected to advance their individual musicianship through completion of technique classes and works for full band. Symphonic Winds performs all seasonal concerts, including Prism and the Fine Arts Festival. Placement in Symphonic Winds is based auditions and benchmark performances.
SYMPHONIC BAND (Period 2)
Mr. Chris Dandeles
This ensemble includes band members in grades 10-12, and concentrates on challenging and appropriate repertoire for symphonic band. Members are expected to advance their musicianship through completion of technique classes. The Symphonic Band performs all seasonal concerts. Membership in Symphonic Band does not require an audition. Any student who has experience playing an instrument is encouraged to join this outstanding ensemble.
CONCERT BAND (Period 6)
Mr. Kevin Carroll & Mr. Chris Dandeles
This ensemble is comprised entirely of freshmen and performs core repertoire for winds and percussion. Students will have formative experiences in analysis and expressive performance. Members are expected to advance their musicianship through completion of technique classes. The Concert Band performs all seasonal concerts. Membership in Concert Band does not require an audition.
Mr. Mark Duker
This auditioned ensemble offers the most advanced instrumental experience through study and performance of master works for winds and percussion. Due to the soloistic nature of part assignments, there is a strong emphasis on individual preparation and performance. The Wind Ensemble performs seasonal concerts and participates in state/district festivals and contests.
Notable honors:
- 2018, 2017, 2011, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006 selected to the Illinois Superstate Band Festival
- Named 2018 Honor Band for Class AAA
- 2009 chamber groups selected to Allerton Chamber Music Symposium
- 2018, 2008 served as a rehearsal lab band at the Midwest Band Clinic
- 2007 performed at the Music for All National Festival
- 2006 performed at the Illinois Music Educators Association State Convention
