Technique Classes
One of the most successful attributes of the District 204 and Waubonsie Valley orchestra program is that students have opportunities weekly to work in small groups with the directors on technical scales and etudes. This ensures that skills necessary for the various levels of orchestras are introduced, taught, exercised and assessed. Students in Concert Orchestra, Concert Strings, Symphonic Orchestra, and Symphonic Strings attend technique classes *during* their orchestra class time. If their director is Mr. Burck, then their technique teacher is Ms. Silberman. If their director is Ms. Silberman, then their technique teacher is Mr. Burck. Chamber Orchestra students will attend technique class once per week with Mr. Burck during their lunch period.
Technique class assignment assessments count significantly towards the grade in the orchestra class.
All students in technique classes will be provided a packet for the year that contains the etudes and scales that will be assigned in Technique class. This is a change from previous years. If you'd like to acquire the books that we chose the technique repertoire from, the list is below (but not mandatory for students to own). Copies of the Technique Packet will be available to students on the Google Classroom.
Students in Chamber Orchestra will participate both in technique classes and chamber music during their lunch.
Students in Chamber Strings participate in small chamber groups and full symphony during the first half of their lunch, rather than technique classes. It's expected that students in Chamber Strings are taking private lessons and are working technique during their home practice. Chamber Strings semester finals consist of students performing etudes and solo pieces.
